GTFS & GIS 101: Introduction to GTFS Data Feeds and How to Use Them

Need to summarize, aggregate, or disaggregate transit data at the route, stop, or geographic level? This workshop will show you how to use General Transit Feed Specification (GTFS) data to conduct region-wide analyses for summarizing levels of service by day, time period, route, stop or geographic area. Seasoned transit professionals from Foursquare Integrated Transportation Planning will guide participants through the process of using GTFS data for basic geographic transit analysis. Participants will learn how to extract stop, route, schedule data from GTFS feeds in Microsoft Excel and/or Microsoft Access; create relationships between feed components to summarize information at different levels; and display the information spatially in GIS software. Presenters will also provide a brief primer on GTFS data for new users: What is GTFS? What is included in a GTFS feed? How do all of the feed components relate to one another and to the source agency’s schedule data?
 
Target Audience: Transit Agency Planners, Engineers, or Data Analysts; Transit/Transportation Planner Consultants; MPO Staff; Transit Agency Staff responsible for Title VI Reporting (transit service monitoring); Transit Agency Staff responsible for general transit monitoring or performance monitoring (non-FTA requirements); Transit Advocates; Transportation Researchers/Scholars
 
Pre-requisites: Basic understanding of transit data and transit terminology; basic understanding of MS Excel; basic understanding of ESRI ArcMap

Requirement: Each registered attendee should bring a laptop equipped with Excel and ArcGIS  software. 

Class Size: A limited number of individuals may register for this workshop.

Cost: There is an additional fee of $75 to attend this course.
